Soil temperatures are used to determine when conditions will be
right for germination and growth of planted seeds, weed seeds, or insect
growth. The measurement depth of these sites is 4 inches below the ground
surface on a sod covered site. In spring and autumn the soil temperature
can vary several degrees during the day, and the 24 hour summary data is
the average for the day so the hourly data should be checked to evaluate
the variation throughout the day. Four of the sites have measurements at
2,4,8,20,40, and 72 inches that are recorded at 0800 LST which provide
further information on the condition of the soil profile at that site.
